My problems with Retsupurae Part 2: Cancer is not a Joke!
This video below is the first episode of “Retsupurae” I ever saw:
Judging from the thumbnail, I thought it would be a pitch for a game about raising awareness for breast cancer. After all, they use the pink ribbon, a well known symbol of the fight against breast cancer. As it turns out, it’s a “review of a review” - the reviewer of a Tomb Raider game suggests that the developers give Lara Croft breast cancer in the storyline of the next game. An odd comment for sure, but the reaction from Slowbeef and Diabetus is even worse.
Retsupurae’s response is to have a big laugh at the idea, as though breast cancer is a hilarious topic. As long as they’re making jokes it’s OK right? Wrong. How do cancer survivors, those who’ve lost loved ones to this disease, or people with a family history of breast cancer feel?
They continue and go all out with jokes in this video - about pregnancy, menstruation, AIDS, etc. They giggle like mad at the thought of a large-breasted woman getting a double mastectomy. Would it be funny if we talked about a man getting castrated? Not in our male dominated culture. Personally, I think Slowbeef and Diabetus have such an enthused reaction to the idea out of their fear of sexually powerful women.
Let’s take this unfortunate display of insensitivity as an opportunity to spread breast cancer awareness.
this blog is gold.
